Behind The Scenes

CREATING CABIN NINE

November 20, 2018

When I created 'Cabin Nine,' I was strongly influenced by my own time at summer camp - I spent many years as a camper, but this work was particularly informed by my time as a counselor. Now, this page exists to answer more questions about Cabin Nine - what it means to me, what it was intended for - and beyond.

Why did you write Cabin Nine?

I wrote Cabin Nine as a love letter to my own experiences in summer camp - the experiences of the campers in Cabin Nine are all based off of real moments I either saw or experienced once I was a counselor. I love the power of small moments in temporary communities, and I wanted to write a story that acknowledged the impact of those moments. Most camp counselors will never receive letters like Jamie, so this is my love letter to all camp counselors. The days are hard, but your impact is more than you will ever know.
